Cyanuric acid (CYA) and stabilizer or conditioner are essentially different names for the same pool chemical. Cyanuric Acid is the technical or chemical name of the compound.
Cyanuric Acid (CYA)
Cyanuric acid is a white, granular solid chemical added to pool water to protect chlorine from being broken down by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. It acts as a “shield” for chlorine, allowing it to remain in the pool longer and continue disinfecting effectively. Without cyanuric acid, chlorine degrades rapidly under sunlight, often losing up to 50% of its effectiveness in just a few hours.
Effects of Low Cyanuric Acid:
· Chlorine burn off
· Increased need for chlorine
· Pool water quality
· Chlorine odor
Effects of High Cyanuric Acid:
· Reduced chlorine effectiveness
· Changes Total Alkalinity
· Damage to pool surface
· Human teeth staining
